saturn rising

Acrylic on illustration board, with collage (map), oil pastels, and dripped wax. Inspired by the work of the writer Thomas Moore. before this painting, there was a time when i didn't paint for almost an entire summer... was in a "funk", depressed. Read Moore's The Re-enchantment of Everday Life, in which was a chapter on "dark nights of the soul"... in ancient times, depression, sadness etc were blamed on the diety Saturn, who was portrayed as an old man. other symbols in the piece stand for finding your way, rebirth, etc. the text is medical terms for the heart and brain, in latin, upside down... I think Saturn really opened me up to beginning to find my style and "voice". 12 inches by 24 inches. completed October 2003. i look forward to your comments... thanks for stopping.

This is fantastic, I love all your symbolism. It's always such a relief to find something that inspires you to get out of the "funk"! Excellent work!
