King kong

Pretty much finished with this, pastel on velour. It didnt quite turn out like I orignally planned...From Peter Jackson's King Kong...I have to say I watched the 1976 version last night, and it was almost perverted the way Kong played with Jessica Lange, pulling her shirt down and getting all bothered, which is really rediculous....and those awful special effects.Makes one really appreciate the new version. Peter Jackson's version has none of that,it is soooo much better, done with some class. Back to drawing,Jack Black and Adrien Brody's faces were alot of work and then I felt they were overworked....I am studying a Drew Struzan book of his poster paintings to try and figure out how to retain the likeness but not overwork something.

Hey Chris, Kong looks fantastic! It was a great movie, better than I was expecting. The ape's facial expressions were amazing. Wonder what special effects will be like in 15 or 20 years?

WOW! Great job! I really enjoyed the remake! Far superior to the '77 one...('Course Jessica Lange looked great in short-shorts!) I absolutely loved the classic 1933 "King Kong" and it's still one of my favorites. it was a breakthrough for it's time. Nice work!

Chris, I went to see the new version of King Kong with my brother. I had seen the one with Jessica Lang in it too when it came out. I couldnt recall it at all. It must have been less than memorable...lol I thought the T-rex and Kong fights were pretty good in this one. There's no doubt that the computer special effects are far superior to the ones in the past. You have to give those old film makers credit for the good effort.

Artist Reply: I understand what you mean, the thing is...Ray Harryhausen movies are older than the 76 Kong, and I appreciate those effects, those were awesome for the time. But to stick a guy in a monkey suit,...I just thought it sucked pretty badly.Kong had a really pervish look about him in the 76 one..Parts of the film had decent effects, but would be followed shortly by something really sub par.

excellent work, wow:)

joan warburton 24 Dec 2005

This is fantastic! Wonderful detail and shading. Keep in mind, for the technology of the day, the original King Kong was a masterpiece in it's time! Far more skill and ingenuity was involved to achieve the effects they did. Today everything can be done with computer effects. Beautiful work Chris.

Artist Reply: Thanks Joan,I would agree with you about the original 30's King Kong movie with Fay Wray.I am talking about the 1976 version however,it was just silly to me....and as a fan of both Jeff Bridges and Charles Grodin,well...they couldnt save this one.
