Hagerman Fossil Beds 2

I've been offline traveling for the past week. This was taken at the Hagerman Fossil Beds in Idaho. Fossil bones of zebras, beaver, pelicans and other water birds are found in sediments in this area left from a 3,4000,000 year old pond on the bluff across the Snake River. Lava flows pored out over the plains on one side of the river while dammed up sedimentary deposits washed in on the other side creating lakes and swamps. The Snake River divides two important geologic settings formed at a time when the climate was wetter and the Idaho plains were tree-dotted grasslands where zebra-like horses used to graze.
