This truly is a PILE of wheat. The Durum wheat in this case was running around 50 bushels to the acre! Pretty good! The bins were already full so the wheat had to be temporarily stored in a pile on the ground. This pile consists of 38 semi loads!! It is approximately 40,000 bushels. That's my mom standing beside the pile in the bottom picture to give you some perspective.

To all my Dutch friends, the farmers in this case are very very hard workers and though they proudly Canadian they are also extremely proud of their Dutch heritage.

Some facts: Durum (Latin for hard) is the best wheat for making pasta because of it's hardness. When most wheat is milled, the heart of the wheat kernel breaks down into a fine, powdery flour, but durum is hard enough to hold together. The result is a granular product called semolina. Durum kernels are amber-coloured, giving pasta its yellow hue.
