The father of the breed was Max Von Stephanitz, a cavalry captain who in the late 1800s bred dogs for utility and intelligence. German Shepherds are working dogs that have been used as sheepdogs, police and military dogs, as Seeing Eye dogs, and as faith full companions. An obedient worker, quick to learn, fleet of foot, elegant and intelligent, they have been called the world's best all around dog.
