ALAN BAKER-BUFFALO BILL

This was the first piece of a new collection for me. This is Alan Baker of Cody, Wyoming in character as a middle-aged, William "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The photo reference was taken by my wife, Leigh, when we were in Cody, WY September of 2004. This study was the first of many photos that Alan so graciously let us capture. The greatest thing about this photo, it was totally "candid." We stepped onto the porch of Buffalo Bill's historical hotel, "The Irma," named for his daughter. We first saw Alan waiting patiently for his turn to play his part in an "Old West" re- enactment when Leigh snapped this fantastic milli-second in time. The original photo can be seen on Leigh's ArtWanted site.

I want to state right here and now, this is NOT a photo manipulation in any way, shape, or form. This is a painting, totally brush-stroked to a Masonite, Gesso covered board called "Claybord" made by Ampersand. The overall size of this painting is 16" x 20," painted to the finished edges. The medium is acrylics, laid down in thick layers. There are very few washes. The few there are upon a thick layer of color.

I want to say also that I am being pressured into going the route of "full color." Not that there is a single person holding a "proverbial gun" to my head, but this is something I must do if I ever want to be recognized in the field of "Western Art." So after not laying acrylics to board since 1971 in art school, this is my first attempt in 34 years. I dislike remembering how to do anything after such a long time and don't give me that old crap of, "It's like riding a bicycle." It's not!

My main objective here is that I want to hang with the "greats" in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and "the" gallery of all Western Galleries, "The Big Horn Gallery," both in Cody, Wyoming. I know now I will never get into either no matter how good my graphites are. Most everyone here is well aware of this. Maybe later my pencils will sell, for I am still a "pencil artist" by heart, but if I need to do color, I WILL paint, no questions asked!

Denny, impressive art details.

L Anderson 29 Nov 2008

You show wonderfu; technique here. A lot of patience required.

Marlene Piccolin 29 Mar 2008

Ah, if Bill truly looked like this and came along today....might just have to ride off with him! You are a master at graphite and now color as well. I deeply appreciate your comment on my Alpha Male. To be noticed by one so talented is an honor. My first love is graphite too, but I think you are right; to really be recognized, you need color. I give you credit for reaching back all those years to the obviously well-learned training. You are an inspiration sir...

Angela Drysdale 24 Feb 2008

I always liked your drawings but I can see that colour is no stranger to you either. This is one of my favourites of your work. and I fully agree with Patti Jo, you will make it

Patti Jo 06 Feb 2008

Denny...the edtail in this...and ALL your work is awsome! Keep it up and you will make it into those museums that you want to be in. I know how hard it is to get "noticed". It is so hard and if you are financially strapped it is even harder cuz it costs so much to promote yourself. That is why this site is so good...and though when it started I think it was mostly other artists looking at our stuff...and maybe it still is primarely. I still think that in time...AW will get noticed too...and thus...maybe WE will get noticed. YOu are really a fine gifted artist.

betty luna 09 Dec 2007

you;ve done so well, It does look like a photo, only coming from an artist point of view, i can see that it's not, its done by a very fine artist is why it looks like this. It's superb

Barbara Jensen 09 Jan 2006

Hi Denny....I just spent the last 1 1/2 hours looking through your tutorials...thank you SO much for sharing with us all. Every one was easy to follow and to the point. I could tell a lot of hard work went into these. So...thank you! Delving back into acrylics is a brave adventure! I hate them....or more to the point....they hate me. lol!!! You have once again pulled off what I deem the impossible...a beautiful painting in acrylics! (: As stated before ...you are a master.

Christina Langman 01 Jan 2006

Denny - I am very impressed by this... being a pencil artist myself (who really dislikes working in paint!) I admire your ability to transfer to such different mediums so flawlessly. This is wonderfully detailed and crisp work - very much your "style"! :) Keep it up!

Please excuse me Denni, while I go into a dark room and cry quietly in the corner. I am trying very hard to get acrylics to behave and then I see this treasure. I should hate you, but I can't. I am not worthy, I am not worthy....

Michael Bollerud 07 Nov 2005

Athena Thomas 06 Nov 2005

This piece is GORGEOUS! I know you used your wife's stunning candid photo of Alan as a reference, so first I just have to say the reference is fantastic. Nice to see such an original portrait stance. I think your choice of using Clayboard is brilliant. I know it means more when someone sees the piece in person but I can tell from the close ups that clayboard would subtly lend to the "western" feel of this piece. I use acrylic all the time and let me tell you, I am in AWE of what you've accomplished here. How you were able to get the "oil painting" feel in his leather jacket and obtain the smoothness of flesh tones with acrylic is a glorious testment to your clever artistic skills. I love being able to really see the time you spent in the details; the hair, all the embroidery; simply stunning. The colors are perfect, too; the deep rich colors in the embroidery really contrast nicely with the warm, washed tans and browns of the clothes and background. Your light source is just wonderful; so strong in the front allowing for rich contrasts without highlights being washed out. You are indeed the master of your craft, sir, and it is always a pleasure to pour over your new work. Thanks again for sharing this marvelous piece with us, and I can't wait to see more of your gallery-quality work!!

Reggie Simpson 02 Nov 2005

Patrick Taylor 24 Oct 2005

Denny, Wonderful capture you did here, and in acrylic. I paint in oils and just completed a mural for our police department using acrylics, man was that different. Outstanding work; mood composition and color. I remember your works in pencil and was amazed at your skill. I think I asked you along time ago if you were familiar with Paul Calle. I look forward to seeing your "Colored" workes. You truely understand the process of capturing light and how it falls and moves across an object. Well done.

Katrina P 28 Sep 2005

Okay, I like this better than any I have ever seen of yours, I agree, that "like riding a bike" is not true. In fact in every piece I do I do it differently, try new ways, paints, etc to get the effect. There are no bikes in art if you are progressing. It's a war to be won and a war I love. I bow to you, lol, you outdid me so much I will never catch up! WTG! I love to see someone grow, try different and hold on to self in their art, you are one of the few that do this. Dang it, another on my knees bow and hat off to you on this. (I am up for adoption as I keep telling you two!)
