Auction Day

Another bitter-sweet moment in the life of a 4H member. Time to let go of her "project". Oil on canvas. For those of you who do not know what the 4H signifies, please read on. I pledge: My head to clearer thinking, My heart to greater loyalty, My hands to larger service and My health to better living, for my Club, my Community, my Country and my World Above is the pledge of the United States 4-H club. It is a program set up by the U. S. Department of Agriculture originally in rural areas to help young people to become productive citizens by instructing them in useful skills (as in agriculture, animal husbandry, and carpentry), community service, and personal development.

Thanks, Betty , for explaining about the 4H Club. I saw it mentioned at the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver this year but I wasn't sure what it was exactly. I only knew it was related to cows or other farm animals. Your paintings and your words enlighten us non-country folk to the ways of another world, a world that is both romantic and distant. I always like to see your paintings. Incidently, are you familiar with the photographs of Richard W. Brown?

Beautiful painting with wonderful use of colors. Fantastic application and use of white for her clothes.

This is a lovely painting...and i can understand the bittersweet feeling that comes with letting something go. I sort of knew what 4h did but not why or how it came about. Thank you for sharing that with us.

Artist Reply: A great big "THANK YOU" to all of you for your very kind remarks about this painting. I really appreciate each of you!!

Love the warmth and glow of the sunlight... You have got the sheep and the girl captured to a "t".I Used to raise sheep so know the "p's and q's". Nice contrast and composition!

tim linville 22 Sep 2005

You are definitely a child of light,Betty! You have to be one of the best contrast artists at catching the warm sun:)

Casey Catton 22 Sep 2005

I can almost feel the soft coat on the sheep it is so skillfully rendered...beautiful lighting (love the see-throughness- of her shirt)...wonderful work!

Diana Hume 22 Sep 2005

Wow! Betty! The light is great! The texture of the lambs wool and the straw are perfect, as is the emotional sense of the young lady who must let her project go. Ooops became attached, didn't she? The pledge is the same in the Canadian 4H clubs.
