The E Hall

This is a painting done with the feelings and imagery from my time spent at the Glasgow Shipyard of Kvaerner Govan. The E hall was where the large bits of superstructure were welded and assembled, a dark, dangerous and noisy place where the travelling cranes rumbled like Lancaster bombers overhead, and the gloom was punctuated by the welding arcs... men and women worked here, and there were many characters, all more or less friendly- like "Chiefy Dogg" and "Lunch Ticket"...and I can't forget "Queen Boedicea" either. A strange and mythical place. The painting is made with acrylics on paper, overlaid with sketches taken at the time and then worked into with ctayons and more acrylics. There are also one or two found items from the yard.

The colors are so beautiful it makes me want to cry. It seems so unfair that one would have so much talent... but the winners need someone to cheer for them, right? I can imagine looking at it from all angles and it would still be an incredible masterpiece.

Quite an amazing painting here Iain...filled with all these wonderful cranes and characters.....this looks like a personal diary so richly expressed of your time in this unique setting.....it is great that you have been able to convey some of this places' extrordinary and mythical type qualities.....some places and people can seem a bit that way!!! The dog seems such a lovely and sweet character with a lovely pink halo....there seems to be so many colours changing from lighter and darker shades....which I could well imagine would be appropriate and symbolic for such a setting.....It feels like there are lots of stories within this Art....Marvellous Abstract!!!

I agree with Paul. Surprized by the traffic in the lower right. Interesting use of collage.

So much to look out and all so interesting. I love the layers, the different materials and the composition. Obviously the time you spent at the Shipyard made a great impact on you. This is an outstanding work of memorabilia.
