Winging Away

My first scratchboard (other than the ill-fated "big-headed bunny" of fourth grade...;-). The original was 8"x10" claybord. Prints of him are one of my most popularly selling items. Copyright 2003.

I am looking to do a back piece {tattoo} of a winged lion...would you feel beyond annoyed {or flattered :) if I were to refer to your lovely scratchboard artpiece as a concept?

Matthew Kukosky 22 Sep 2005

nice work, the wings are cool

Wow! This is impressive! I really had to go and find out what 'scratchboard' is. Done so on wikipedia. To a degree it's very similar to how I do my b/w-airbrushings. Thanks for the hint ;-)

i really enjoy this piece miss Shannon Reinbold Gee.you used a nice variety of line and texturers.one thing that might have worked better though is a variation in cloud size, or at least a tade more sizes.you could have really pushed the space by doing that.by overall a very nice image

Artist Reply: Thanks, Ryan. That's an interesting point about varying cloud sizes. I guess part of it was my interest in maintaining some sense of balance/symmetry. Nobody's ever mentioned cloud size before--altho' a bunch of people have claimed I hid some interesting images IN the clouds... :-) I've gotta' admit that I was really just playing around with steel wool on the surface--Glad I got a cloudiness at all considering I had never tried claybord before! :-) But, wow, I guess size DOES really matter ;-) .

Wow! Looks like a winged Aslan. Really beautiful.

Artist Reply: Susan, thanks! You're not the first to mention Aslan, but oddly enough he wasn't even on my radar when I did this piece. I had just been doing that old "Native" thing of trying to imagine what the piece is meant to be (works really well with amber and soapstone, by the way :-). Then I started working, and playing. And he emerged.

Beautiful scratchboard art....man it has been awhile I would love to do a scratchbaord again. This is top notch for a first...

Artist Reply: Chris, if you want to play around with scratchboard again, check out the stuff called "claybord." It's a great product (backed with masonite) and its highly durable. Also, look at the work of a pal of mine, Stanley Morrison. He specializes in scratchboard and has done amazing stuff with dragons. I actually got this piece of claybord by trading him a rhea egg (which he then carved in a contest judged by Anne McCaffrey). Check him out!

excellent work, amazing!!

Artist Reply: Thank you, Aris. I'm working on a complementary piece now--hopefully I'll have it done and posted in a little while--little being a very relative word ;-) !

Fantastic piece! Especially for your first scratchboard

Artist Reply: Yep, I got lucky with this one ;-) . I consider it my first, but I dare not forget the big-headed bunny of elementary school... he was my very first scratchboard. And no, I won't post him here, so you needn't worry! :-)

Shannon, beautiful piece the work is very well executed. Scratch board is the perfect medium for this work. It lends its self to the mood and texture so well. Keep up the good work.

Artist Reply: Thank you, Jason. I'm so glad you feel it works well together-- :-)

Artist Reply: Christine, I'll definitely check out your work and look for your new piece as soon as I get a chance--I try to do that for anyone kind enough to leave a note here for me. :-) I'm no longer surprised that people run across others with similar visions. Perhaps it's serendipity. Of course, it could be copyright violation (just kidding ;-) --Besides, karma'd get 'em for that! :-)

LARRY STANGE 17 Aug 2005

Very nice!

Artist Reply: Thank you, Larry! I had a lot of fun experimenting my way through this piece. I had no idea what to do with the claybord when I first got it!
