Perspectives

Painting this image was slightly reactionary!

My BFA review panel strongly suggested that fairies might not really be considered fine art.

So...I drew some more fairies!

But these ones are serious! See, they are playing chess. An intellectual pursuit. And see, pathos...the losing fairy is devastated and the winning one elated.

Devastation/ elation; it all depends on your perspective.

I also tried to show a lot of 3 dimensional perspective in the chess board ; perspective again.

Fine art / pretty fairy pictures; perspective.

Who says I am not a deep thinker?

P.S. My husband and I play 3-4 chess games a day on this board.

Outstanding colour, light and form. The right fairy and drapery are nice in colour but less convincing on form. Professors can be brought into your camp with allusions to Blake or Fuseli. This has got me thinking of dressing people up as fairies and photographing them as resource material. I could see you and your husband dressed up as fairies playing chesss - (The games people play) - street people pushing shopping carts, Your B.F.A. panel, Just realy push the concept. Whimsy is not totaly out of place when it comes to fine art.

Artist Reply: Thankyou for your observations! And for the references! Funny how adding the words to prove your acedamia are required to to reach those embroiled in the world of academia! Yes, I love whimsey!

your little daily-life fairies make my day. :) i hop ei have a couple flitting around that play on my side. ;) (ps, you seem to have a great sense of humor :))

It's the hard against the soft. This theme should be expanded. I cannot imagine what the BFA panel missed in this exploration. What is it about educators that presumes all has been discovered and the only task is to teach it? Poor souls!

Dan Mills 29 Jul 2005

This is very cool, Diana. What does the BFA know anyway?

Greg Vilton 28 Jul 2005

This painting has so much going for it. The colors are bold and clear. The perspective you have created is masterful. The fairies show victory as well as defeat. This is brilliant as Jennifer mention. Great piece in everyway.

Alberto D'Assumpção 22 Jul 2005

Casey Catton 21 Jul 2005

Beautiful job...great perspective and composition, life giving palatte, and a fantasy story starter. Super imagination and great skill demonstrated here! Fantastic!

Les Jobes 21 Jul 2005

Absolutely fascinating piece Diana! Your perspective is really quite good and the 3D effect is working wonderfully as well! The emotions of the little fairies is outstanding! Love how the winner has seemingly slammed down the winning move onto the board (moving the tile underneath the piece) and the losers body language is so very evident with defeat! and her pieces knocked over! Brilliant artwork!! Excellent pastel!!

Jay Amatangelo 21 Jul 2005

cool angle on a chess baord. I think the fairies add a little of your own kick.

Renata Cavanaugh 21 Jul 2005

Charles Redman 20 Jul 2005

I'm most impressed by the chess pieces and their grain work

Karina Ishkhanova 20 Jul 2005

Very creative idea! Perfect answer to the BFA panel. What could be more fine and closer to art than gentle fairies?! And the chessboard - I love its diagonal wave view and that small space around first row black square makes it appear alive and breathing. Great work!

ashok nayak 20 Jul 2005
