Ettore Bugatti was born in Milan, Italy in 1881. His father Carlo was an artist and designer of furniture. Ettore worked in automotive mechanical design for several European manufactures before he began to produce his own cars from a factory in Molsheim, Alsace Germany in 1909. After World War I, Alsace was returned to its historic position as part of France. In 1924, Bugatti introduced the car that would make his name legendary, the Type 35. It was the most important and dominate racing car in Europe between the years 1927 to 1931. The artwork of the Type 35 superimposed over a recreation of an historic Bugatti racing poster is based on a poster and car that are displayed at the Indianapolis Speedway Hall of Fame Museum in Speedway, Indiana.
