The Stare Down

While photographing a herd of Bison which also included some young baby bison , I was confronted by this sentry bison.. Bison have some of the traits one finds with elephants as far as how they interact and protect the overall family unit of the herd. These sentry bison act as interference or guards in that they will put themselves in between a perceived threat and the babies or herd in general. Such is the case with this bison. The herd was grazing, I and a few others where attempting to photograph them and this one bison looked up and saw us and proceeded to walk over and place himself in between us. He pretty much kept this stare down pose at me until I had finished and started to walk away . Then he walked away and went back over to where he first was in the first place. It was rather facinating to watch the dynamics of how the herd family interacted and protected itself..

I once had a bison storming up to me at Calgary Zoo... we had a tall chain link fence between us, but I really scared me big time~!! I was just walking along the fence, and when I came out of the bush area (from bison's view) I guess I must have scared him.... sometimes I walk without making much noise, so he didn't see me coming...lol needless to say, I found out that day, I can scream loud and run fast... not 35MPH though..;) Beautiful shot, as always, Gary..:-)

great photo Gary..I always like the side bar that goes with your photographs..Great shot.

Artist Reply: Thank you Vicki, It first started out that I would just put the latin name of the animal and a few points about it with my images , but I had a couple images that had some interesting antedotes about them or history/info I thought was interesting and people started commenting how they enjoyed them and it just started from there that now it is like I have to have a story about them...lol but actually there usually is a story with any image you take. SO I have just decided to take the viewer on the journey as to what was going on in my head or with the event when it happened or why I chose to take it... Glad you and the others enjoy my little sidebars...
