The Intimidation

Alaskan Brown Bears, Brooks Falls,Brooks Camp Alaska.. Yes , this is the Falls with the Bears Fishing for Salmon that you see on National Geographic T.V.... The Brown Bears of Alaska are kin(sub species) to the Grizzly But are Much Bigger because of their main diet of protein rich Salmon of which when they first come out of hibernation they eat pretty much whole but as they satisfy their initial hunger began to eat just the roe(eggs) and the skin. It gives them the most nutrients with the least amount of effort.. When your trying to fatten for the winter months you want the most calories without the expenditure of energy..It's mother Natures Way..The bear on the left has just finished fishing on top of the falls and now wants the spot of the bear down at the right who has been fishing the area below the falls as there are hundreds of Salmon just underneath the water queing up ready to make a run of the falls to get back to their breeding grounds. So the intimadation begins to see who will back down.. ..The Bear on the right (which is a older bear past his prime)finally gives in and leaves his spot to the younger and probably stronger bear..

Where is it? I love this shot. It is so funny and intimate.

Artist Reply: Hi Andree, this was taken in Alaska in the Katmai National Park in a place called Brooks Camp. This is Brook Falls, the same location that numerous National Geographic ,etc programs showing Bears catching salmon jumping are taken.

This is awesome Gary... I do hope you where in a truck or a car though :)

Artist Reply: Actually for this image ,there is a wooden platform that you are able to be on that is on the bank of the river and it has a gate so the bears can not come and join you..lol However getting there you do sometimes see them on the trail, the good thing is , in general they are fairly well fed so they are not too aggressive. But that does not mean you would not be in danger from them.. They have now built a long enclosed ramp that is about 7 feet off the ground to get to the platform... I have to say I will miss traveling the dirt trail with a small group on our way there. It did raise the hair on your neck a little when you would hear a rustle in the woods. Just make sure you can out run the slowest person in the group...LOL
