Navajo Traffic Jam

Navajo Traffic Jam oil, 8 by 10 inches on oil primed panel, was finished May 18, 2005. It is the sixteenth painting in my series titled Unforgettable. The subject of this scene is a Navajo rider on the road to Sand Springs, Monument Valley, in the summer of 1962. From left to right, the two formations behind him are known as The Yei Bi Chei andThe Totem Pole, and remain virtually unchanged. Although our rider was probably the flocks owner, most of the actual shepherding was, and still is, done by dogs. Since Sand Springs was the only natural source of water for many miles, I imagine that on this hot summer day, he was on his way to water his horse when he got stuck behind this flock, on the same road, for the same reason. © 2005, John Watt artist retains all rights to any reproduction of this original art.
