Mississippian Era Priest holding a ceremonial mace

A priest of the Mississippian Era American Southeast holding a ceremonial flint mace and the severed head of a captive. This piece was based on a photo of a model, a graphite drawing was done, scanned and then painted digitally in Photoshop7. The dress and ornamentation were based on a shell gorget found in Tennessessee. Inluded are the spiral whelk shell necklace, the flint mace(possibly a scepter of office),and the severed head with the weeping hawks eye design. All are associated with the "Southern Death Cult", sometimes known as the "Southern Ceremonial Cult" and the "Buzzard Cult".
