Pride N Joy oil, 10 by 8 inches on archival canvas panel, was finished February 14, 2005. It is the thirteenth painting in my series titled Unforgettable. This young Navajo was clearly beaming at the chance to show off her young charge, wrapped securely in the traditional cradle board. The opening she stands in front of is the east facing door to her hogan, a traditional mud, stone, and log structure where many Navajo women still prepare meals and raise their families. This scene occured in Monument Valley in 1959. Life on "The Rez" has changed considerably, but the pride and joy in the Navajo traditions are still very much evident today. © 2005 John Watt
