Panspermic apple

Sculpture; 5" x 5", 2005. A theory known as panspermia suggests that the genetic instructions that maintain life originated outside the earth. Exactly how and where these original seeds came to be is unknown. These life instructions are carried across vast distances within comets (made largely of ice, thus sheltered from radiation) and collide into much larger bodies such as planets or moons. Such a theory suggests that the universe is essentially involved in a continuous process of life pollination; as if consciousness was nearly a requirement. I tried to depict this by creating a sculpture of an apple which has been unzipped to unleash a flurry of pollen-like structures.
