The Emperors Slit Shell

This shells full Latin name is . . . Entemnotrochus Adansonianus . . . Adansons Slit Shell. This deep water shell is unusual and rare, not normally found in shell collections. It was first found by a Japanese naturalist in 1843, the slit shell family consists of top shaped shells characterized by a remarkable slit in the edge of the outer shell. This allows the mollusk inside to expel waste. The Emperor of Japan was an avid collector of this species . . hence its name. I recovered this specimen in the warm mid Atlantic Ocean using a wire shell trap at a depth of over 120 fathoms (720 feet)
