Humpback Whale Pectoral Fin | Maui Ocean Wildlife

**Humpback Whale — A Moment Above the Pacific** An enormous pectoral fin rises almost vertically from the blue Pacific Ocean as a humpback whale briefly reveals part of its remarkable anatomy above the surface. Humpback whales possess some of the longest pectoral fins of any whale, reaching approximately one-third of their total body length. These powerful appendages help with maneuvering and are also used in behaviors such as flipper slapping at the ocean's surface. Each winter, humpback whales travel to the warm waters surrounding Hawai?i to breed, give birth, and care for their young. Their annual return is one of Maui's most extraordinary natural events. What makes this photograph special to me is the contrast between the whale's enormous white fin and the deep blue ocean. For a brief moment, an animal of incredible size and grace reveals itself above the water. Original Maui marine wildlife photography by Theron Peck of Peck Photography Art.
