Wall Street is simultaneously a street, a neighborhood, a financial district, and around the world, shorthand for American finance itself. This Wall Street station sits beneath Wall and William Streets on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line. Opened in 1918, it is served today by the 2 & 3 trains, identified by their iconic red route bullets. There are actually two separate subway stations named Wall Street in Lower Manhattan. This is the 2/3 Wall Street; the other, beneath Broadway, serves the 4 and 5 trains with their green route bullets. Two stations, two lines, two distinct identities sharing one of the most recognizable names in New York City. Re-imagined in recycled computer keys, the piece creates an interesting contradiction: Wall Street—a global symbol of value—constructed from discarded technology that had essentially lost its value.
