Hoar Frost coated Tree on Hillside early morning between Julian California and Lake Cuyamacha. Hoar frost forms when water vapor in the air touches a solid surface that is already below freezing. The freezing process is so quick that it traps air, giving it a white or silver opaque appearance.

In the high desert in Northern Nevada I have seen it handing up to 18 inches off of animals and plants .....it is beautiful

Artist Reply: That is interesting that it is referred to White Death. It is a beautiful look when it happens to the right grasses and trees. I was lucky that day as I don't usually see that particular look when out photographing in early Fall/winter in California.
