Meet the Ace of Arrows from the Morbidly Adorable Tarot! Aces are the inspiration, or the spark. The Ace of Arrows is about finding clarity, reaching a breakthrough. You are pierced with the truth. You are open to new possibilities, and try as you might, you can never go back to who you were before the revelation. You have found your conviction. I based this card on Bernini’s famous statue "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa" in Rome, Italy. Many years ago, I witnessed this statue in my travels. I wanted to create my own version. Saint Teresa was visited by an angel who pierced her heart with a golden spear. It was an awakening that left her soul on fire in seeking God. Though the pose of Saint Teresa is remarkable, the angel is the one that consumed my focus. If you get a moment, look for images of the angel’s face from the front. It is pure divinity. I realize this card would have 100% fit the bill for the Ace of Wands with its reference to spiritual passion, but I decided to use it for the Ace of Arrows instead. One, the use of a “golden spear” easily translates into a golden arrow. Two, the statue has a nature of discovery to it. As I mentioned above, the Ace of Arrows is revelatory. When one has a new idea or sees the truth, the Heavens part and angels sing. It’s hard to imagine life before the piercing arrow. In the original sculpture, it’s beautiful in its all white marble glory, but the Morbidly Adorable Teresa is full of vibrant and rich colors that come with the epiphany. When it comes to symbolism, I have learned that many images could work for many different cards. Sometimes there are more traditional choices. Some images have very strong meanings that have permeated the culture and seem a natural fit. Then there is the Morbidly Adorable way of symbols, signs, and omens. My hope is that the alternate and buried meanings make the extra exploration worth it for you Raindrop Astronauts out there!
