Ice on the channel

Narrow channels quickly freeze, as does the Leuven - Rupel channel. Icebreakers clear a channel but the next morning it is already frozen over again. Inland vessels make the most of it and sail, sometimes in convoy, through the new thin layer of ice, sometimes briefly in each other's water, as the watercolor shows. However, there have been years of harsh winter that the ice layer was so thick that even the small icebreakers could no longer get through and the ships unable to reach open water were frozen for weeks.
