24"x30" Acrylic on canvas c. 2019 by Marcia L. Wilson. The "Coffee Break!" carousel was inspired by research [Thank you, CarouselHistory.com!] I was doing for my manuscript "Match to Kindling". M.C Illions [and later on "...& Sons Carousel Works"] was one of the premier artisan designer/carvers of his time circa 1908 - 1927. The Los Angeles County Fair at Pomona, CA has one of his restored and beautifully-detailed rounds decorated up top with gargoyles, nude angels [!] and a blissful cherub or two besides his incredible horses. The liberties I've taken with subject matter this go-round don't aspire to match the painstaking detail originally created there, at least I hope it's still there. Sadly, it's been a while since I caught a ride.
