The arrival of a stern wheeler

The Mississippi had (has) an erratic flow. Certainly at the end of the 18th century. Even in the larger cities, building a quay was of little use and that was why floating platforms were attached to mooring posts. The watercolor shows a boat with one wheel behind, the so-called stern wiler. This type of boat was not only cheaper to build but also easier to lay sideways but was not as fast as the so-called side-wheelers. If you look at old images, it is striking that there are so many people yawning and doing nothing. Image size: 260 x 360 mm

Well well... a stern wheeler. The Rose Mary looks to be a split freighter, passenger rig. Interesting times. I just finished the Natchez. She's strictly a tourist boat... mostly a reproduction, with a 1925 engine. I'll post it in a few days. Thanks. Jim

Artist Reply: Hey James, I found the image on internet, I am very intersted in boats, I have never seen the Mississippi but I read the book "Life on the Mississippi" by Mark Twain and found some information on internet. I will send you the translation of the texte I putted on my blog
