THE MONUMENTS MEN

This picture was taken on the TV screen during our viewing of the 2014 film “THE MONUMENTS MEN” in which a platoon of soldiers set out to recover art treasures looted by the Nazis so that Hitler could fill his planned “Super Museum” at Linz. Stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchet, Bill Murray and Jean Dujardin…………………………………………..For most of the 1960s this was where Sid and Richard helped us find and sell antiques, coins and collectors pieces like a Queen Anne doll we sold to one of the Rolling Stones. Rowland Emett; bought a horned gramophone from us to use in the 1968 movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a minuscule classic. By 1976, Time magazine, describing Emett's work, said no term other than "Fantasticator...could remotely convey the diverse genius of the perky, pink-cheeked Englishman whose pixilations, in cartoon, watercolor and clanking 3-D reality, range from the celebrated Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Railway to the demented thingamabobs in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”……………………………….. The house/shops was built in 1745 by a Captain who brought the pine timber over from Canada in his ship, so that he could retire there on The Strand a few yards from Rye Quay.
