This is a colored pencil painting that is based on a photograph I took of a unique shaped old, weathered building that we saw as we were driving near the village of Sister Bay, Wisconsin on our 2016 visit to Door County, Wisconsin. I am always attracted to old buildings because of their look and the unspoken stories they have to tell. We learned just how much history this old building had to share. It now houses the road side Wildwood Market. In the past this same building served as a "migrant picker's shack" to house annual, seasonal workers who traveled to Door County to pick cherries. During WWII this building also housed German prisoners of war that were used as seasonal pickers during this time. With such a unique look and history, I felt that I wanted to share some of it through this painting. The piece is entitled "The Window". The painting is done on two sheets of museum quality Dura-lar polyester film. This is the first time I have applied this technique to one of my pieces. The building itself is done on the surface sheet and the man seen in the window is done only on the underlying sheet to enhance the impression that we are viewing him through an old window. The two sheets were then placed together to form on piece of art.The man is representative of my maternal grandfather. He has nothing to do with these particular stories, but I do remember he did have many stories to tell me as I was growing up. The painting was done using Farber-Castell Polychromos and Prismacolor Verithin pencils. the size of the artwork is 8 X 12 inches.

My goodness! Great detail!

Artist Reply: Judy: Thanks so much for your comment! I do admit that I really like detail. I like to make all my paintings as realistic as I can. I'm a scientist by training and I believe that being a "detail man" for all of my scientific career has also carried over to my career after retirement as an artist! I'm glad that this piece spoke to you in some way. Have a great Thursday. Best regards, Will
