Bucolic Tokyo

Will Smith (American, b. 1968) // Bucolic Tokyo, 1983-85 // Acrylic on canvas || The importance of the viewer’s perception to the aesthetic value of a work of art is a significant feature of Will Smith’s carefully melded brush strokes and is subtly apparent in this painted natural scene. Varying shades of naturally verdant green contrast sharply the blending grays of the stagnant water, stone bridge, and murky sky. Through this gestalt effect viewers are made aware of how the eye can easily discern landscape differences (i.e. the borders between water and land) despite the use of identical colors in both terrains.
