The old railway-station of Bardolino

Behind the camping of Bardolino, where we often spend a few days, stands the old railway-station, till a few years ago it was a hotel, but now, after a thoroughly renovation it became, the meeting point for the pensioners of the village. Of course the old railway have, long time ago, disappeared and is replaced by a 5 km long promenade along the Garda-lake. It is a pity that I did not find any picture of the original station like it was in the old days. Image size: 260 x 360 mm

Over here... turning abandoned railroad right-of-ways into "Rail Trails" is increasingly common. There's an on-going movement, attempting to link the East & West coasts into one long, convoluted pathway. And as many of these abandoned stations become converted to new use... they do survive. It's certainly a commentary on the decline of the railroad as a vital link of commerce... but if folks still use these buildings... they live on. It's unfortunate that you're unable to discover an image of the building during it's intended use. They were were built with much pride by the railroads and other than ports... served as the greatest link to the vast "outside" world..

Artist Reply: That's how it is Jim, yesterday we took the train and it was by chance a slow train that stopped at every station on the route. The journey took a long time, but we saw a few stations where there were no more staff, because only a few trains stop at peak hours and you can only buy a ticket at a ticket machine. They looked somewhat neglected, but nevertheless she still breathed the atmosphere of the past, just like the old railway station of Bardolino. Old disappeared railways are often turned into a cycle path in Belgium and the stations become taverns. Not a bad idea.
