"Steal a march on somebody" is wellknown expression, the picture shows why it is an old nautical expression coming from "get to windward". In a race, the green boat, sailing a fraction faster as the brown one, try to approach as close as possible his rival and will soon cover him with his sails, to set this vessel "out of the wind", so that it will slow down. This manoeuvre is not without danger for both boats. You will notice the crew of the brown vessel, already ready by the big front-sail, in case it will go flapping.
