Artist comment: "Much like a patchwork quilt, this unique and unusual 'kite' is certainly an 'eye-catcher' as you walk the beach during the international kite festival at Long Beach, Washington. The day was grey and breezy as kite makers set out their creations. This one fascinated me and challenged my use of nearly every stick of pastel in my box. After sketching the composition, I painted the quiet tones of sea, sky and sand. In my studio, I started the 'bol' with the lightest tones and worked toward black. There was no visible sunlight to create highlights and shadows, so for dramatic effect, I used bright primary colors (somewhat muted at the top where the sky brightened the bol). The tether lines and figure on the beach completed the painting."
