Night Dig

"During clamming season on the Pacific Coast of Washington, the low tides come at different times, sometimes daytime is for digging, sometimes there is a 'night dig'."

Artist comment: "Living on the Washington coast is a real treat; day or night. Most often the clam digging is during daylight hours. However, there are times when the best tides are after dark, mainly in the winter when the sun goes down early. My husband, Ed, and I had an opportunity recently to observe a night dig. As the sun went down, the lanterns came. I sketched and photographed and made notes for future paintings. Later in my studio, I chose gouache as the best media for depth of color and ease of application. On a full sheet of Arches 140# watercolor paper (22" X 30"), I transferred the image. I mixed a big batch of deep blue and covered the sky area and beach. Using a lighter value, I finished the rest of the sea. I left the figures white paper to complete last. The light from the lanterns is pure white with yellow edges."
