Cupidon - After Bougureau - 1875

14" x 18", Oil on Canvas-- The original Cupidon was painted by Bougureau in 1875. This is One of approx. 15 paintings in a series of cherubs called "Angels Amoung Us." In this painting I tried a new color pallet for the flesh tones. It is centered around the idea that, in shadow...one does not need to "darken" it to make it look dark or set back. This approach is based on using color to achieve the same affect. If you notice the shadow areas on the arms, forehead, neck, right rib cage and abdomen...color was used to darken, or at least give the illusion. I also feel that it adds more "Life" to the image. As light hits skin, some wonderful values can be seen and captured. Throughout the skin, you will see alizarins, blues, purples, greens, oranges and reds. I hope you enjoy her as I enjoyed painting her and bringing it to life.

Startlingly beautiful and the effect you have created with the color shadows is indeed stunning. It is a very masterful painting...and I just love it...so soft and so expressive and so sentimental..the flesh glows and is luminiscent.. Wonderful work..and the detailed view is stunning...
