Awalix/Ixbalanque, the Water-lily Jaguar Moon Goddess, also referred to as the Jaguar Goddess of Midwifery, is the patroness of midwives and childbirth. She is a female lunar ballplayer, the female aspect of Xbalanque, one of the Hero Twins in Maya mythology who was transformed into the moon. Awalix descends through the sky wearing her ball game belt into the underworld at dawn, where she transforms into a lunar water-lily goddess, representing the changes of the seasons or the lunar phase changes. She is usually depicted as bare breasted and wearing a short skirt, sometimes as short as a man's hip cloth, which is how I chose to paint her, since she is a female lunar ballplayer, and is netted because legends speak about the moon being lifted up in a net made of fish. The conch shell on her ear is symbolic of her womb or regeneration. She holds the Mayan glyph, Ix, which means Jaguar or Magic, the day sign for divination and magic powers. In Mesoamerica, the moon is symbolic of transformation, continual change and cosmic birth. The Water-lily Jaguar is associated with the night and the moon during the rainy season, when water lilies flower. www.soulinsights.net © Corina Gabaldón
