St Aku

This is one of the projects for my advanced painting class. It is acrylics with metallic paper cut outs applied, then covered in a heavy high gloss sealer, and doused with glitter. Dirty, dirty glitter! The idea is based on things not being what they seem-- some people see just a decorative pattern. Other people see faces. Patterns are things of order, and patterns like the silver papered one here, which is modeled after wallpaper, are considered a luxury sort of item. Clean lines, even spacing. Elegant to the eye. Time consuming to create. Monsters are chaotic creatures, often bringing to mind carnage and destruction, decay and rot. It can take very little time to destroy things (especially where Godzilla is concerned). Hence the cracking, uneven colours, and the use of glitter, which i felt very naughty putting onto a painting as it is usually reserved for less expensive children's crafts, and often used as a cheap substitute on clothing in place of other glittering items such as sequins, rhinestone, metallic embroidery, etc. This series of 'Monster Wallpapers', if you will, are a mesh of those opposing ideas. I hope it brings you a sense of mysterious mischief, decadence, and maybe a little uneasiness. I'm really obsessed with these things, as you can see I took a great deal of time to cut each face from each sheet of paper. I plan on creating tons more.
