Self Portrait

David Friesen is a very prolific and accomplished artist. Born and raised in the city of Peterborough, he has gleaned many accolades for his works and commissions. When asked what made him turn to art, his reply was simply, "it is who I am, it is what I do...I have been doing art work since I was a kid". As a result of being mentored by artist Neil Broadfoot and influenced a great deal by well known artist David Bierk, who he used to visit, he has become skilled in a variety of mediums. He is always thinking out of the box, yet still keeps within the bounds of traditional art.

Friesen has a deep understanding of oils, watercolours, inks, plaster, acrylics, pastels, and graphite. Never one to shy away from any medium, David has a unique desire for experimentation that helps him to understand the limitations of the mediums being used. This has resulted in hundreds of unique and eye catching, one of a kind originals. In addition to his willingness to be adventurous, he will often combine mediums to understand their interactions and potential to create new and interesting techniques that illustrate his obvious artistic ability.

His artistic journey was almost cut short however. He narrowly escaped loosing his life one night on the streets of Peterborough when two intoxicated rowdies pushed him through a plate glass window. The glass came crashing down, severing his carotid artery. He took some time to mend and was left with a very large scar and nerve damage, but he never lost the burning desire to create

Once owning his own cafe, David hung his paintings throughout the premises and sold a large number of his works. He remembers one particular instance when he sold forty-seven pieces at one time, and then the buyer came back and bought even more. He admits that does not happen every day, but what pleased him the most is that she liked his work and had a place to hang every one of them.

Almost all of his paintings, whether of local scenes or of some out of country adventure, have stories behind them. He recently completed a trip to Ecuador and has many hair raising stories to tell. He experienced everything, from sheer rocked cliffs, narrow ledged roads at great altitudes in dense fog, and rock slides to visiting volcanoes and mingling with wild llamas. He has created a travel log of many of these experiences in his oil paintings.

All of his works are hand constructed from start to finish. David stretches his own canvases and assembles and finishes his own frames to give his paintings the overall look that he desires. He is a traveler and an entrepreneur and has a passion to paint and create. He is Friesen the Artist.

Any one of these 50 originals are available as a limited edition print on canvas, stretched and framed for $150. Print is 12"X12", with frame total dimensions are 14"X14". If you are interested email me with the title of the piece you want a print of. Sorry does not include steel matte for prints.
