Self Portrait

My name is Fred E. Cumberland; I have travelled across the United States from Boston to the Sierra Mountains of California to further my quest to introduce Earth Sculpture and its inherent mysterious powers. Its casual sophistication lends itself to eclectic lifestyles and provides great flexibility in homes or industry settings. Combining local shells and feathers accentuate qualities indigenous to our location, creating a unique balanced relationship with our environment. My work is inspired in part by individuals and their uniquely different lives. I hope to command your attention by subtly nudging your sensibilities, drawing you into a world of relationships; focusing on our shared perceptions of this world we live in. We can no longer hide behind the mask of normality and take lightly our mundane actions. I'll see to it, that you become aware of life's absurdities and the dangers of taking it all too seriously. The subjects share strange exotic features; elongated noses that never seem to stop. Hands from disjointed king crabs replace arms and legs. They are set in dreamlike other-worldly landscapes. Into this atmosphere enters the fairytale childlike sensibilities of contemporary fantasy. I try as a sculptor to become unlimited by subject matter, materials or medium. The term "Earth Sculpture" might not be familiar to you yet, it someday will. With a fanciful imagination and well crafted technique, I hope to blend the antics of animation with the sophistication of fine art. It is said, and is my hope that the seriousness of play and the tragedy of humor do not past you by, for if not for these things, what would we have that matters.
