Leah Hugon The Artist About The Artist

The themes of process and accessibility are the common thread in my body of work. In my current creative process, I start by making a collage. I feel that the art of collage allows me to explore myself and the world around me by tapping into my creative subconscious. I love that collage is such an extremely accessible and connective medium. By harvesting images photographed by other artists I have never met and re-purposing them as the media and subject matter in my own composition, I am connecting myself to the collective creative conversation while at the same time asserting my own unique voice. The process does not stop there. I then reinterpret the collage into a painting. By doing so, I can further manipulate the subject matter thereby amplifying the sound of my inner story found in the collage process. This amplification is a kin to how feedback from an amplifier changes the sounds of a guitar; it is a new expression. Many of these works also include found object/mixed media elements. These elements resonate with my desire to reclaim and re-purpose. By taking my own expression and blending them with objects that would otherwise be useless I am connecting to my own sense of worth. These works are not neat and tidy because my desire is that by seeing the process the viewer will find accessibility. I believe that the artist only does the first part of the work and the viewer takes it from there. The viewer is just as important to these works as the artist, and I hope they will find some of themself in the works just as I have.
