Artist Bio

Desmond McFarlane Is primarily didactic a painter who extends my artistic activities to printmaking and drawing. I have always sought to bring to my creative expression a sense of dynamism blended with an evocative array of qualities that often force the viewer to pause and take notice, or even at times, take a position for or against in a word, I simply want the viewer to take a something from the experience of viewing my work. I want my work to elicit various different types of visual and intellectual responses. I seek to engage the viewer and foster their spirit of inquiry along with a willingness to free themselves from aesthetic categories in order to grasp the spirit and meaning behind my expressions.” Mr. McFarlane, a Caribbean native, received his initial college training in Jamaica where he graduated among the top in his class with diploma in graphic design and art education from the Edna Manley College of Visual Art. He taught fulltime courses adjunct college and high school levels for a few years before immigrating to the US over fourteen years ago. Mr. McFarlane has received numerous awards and scholarships in recognition of his artistic talent, including a fellowship granted by the Organization of American States (OAS) to study printmaking and graphics at the Universidad Da Costa Rica, in Costa Rica Central America. He has won numerous art competitions for painting and printmaking, and his works have been exhibited internationally for the last eighteen years. McFarlane has also received various artistic commissions including an Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) commission to produce portraits of numerous pioneering black physicians, some of which are featured in the annual calendar produced by the ABC since 1996. His works are included in private, corporate, and university collections.

Desmond McFarlane is an Assistant Professor of Fine Art: City Colleges of Chicago Mr. McFarlane completed an MFA Degree at Howard from University Washington DC, 1998, BFA. Degree in Painting and printmaking from Maryland Institute College of Arts, Baltimore MD.
