Self Portrait

Aaron Rutten is a Seattle artist, designer and musician. While enjoying a successful career as a local graphic illustrator, Aaron’s avant-garde creativity is gaining notoriety worldwide.

As a visual artist, Aaron is best known for stimulating the mind as much as the eyes by exploring logic on canvas with a potently persuasive imagination.

His work exhibits a wildly surreal style he often refers to as "dreams trapped inside reality", sardonic and often controversial imagery which vividly articulates his profound passion for imagination and self-expression.

LATEST NEWS: Aaron is pioneering the practice of a new surrealist technique known as "disturbism"

'Disturbism is a surrealist drawing technique, whereby much of the drawing process is influenced and/or unintentionally modified by external, often physical activity.

An artistic practice similar to automatism, spontaneous motion and accidental gestures aid in diminishing rational control. However, it is not internal, but principally external influences that define the nature of disturbism.

A disturbist work of art is characterized by the paper moving more often than the pen.

By removing the Artist from their element, disturbism violates the tranquility of the artistic process and pushes the Artist to relinquish more, if not all of his or her preconceptions about the work in progress. Disturbism challenges the Artist's imagination to respond to chaos with subconscious adaptation.

Conversely, unintentional gestures can be exploited by the Artist and focused to produce erratic lines and haphazard shading, greatly enhancing the expressiveness of a drawing.

Disturbism invokes intense levels of awareness and concentration. Facilitating the subconscious expression by provoking an Artist's reactions, adaptations, improvisations and anticipations.'
