The freedom of watercolor permits spontaneity and immediate reaction to the paint allowing experimentation that is vital to growth and is a never ending challenge. The different styles I use seem to increase the vitality and immediacy, preventing an artistic rut. I have been practicing art for over thirty years, twenty-five years as a sculptor. I became involved with water media and collage in 2000 and initially employed subdued colors exploring landscapes and animal forms. My work progressed and currently I paint in several techniques depending on the subject matter and the message I want to convey to the viewer either employing vibrantly colored pours, transparent watercolor and charcoal, airbrush, or acrylic with collage. Many of my pieces focus on animal forms. I cherish what I consider a connection to animals—an empathy and envy all at once. I consider it a gift of seeing, of sensing. Technicolor Cows is a contradiction of the leisurely, steady gaze and the power of the animal. The Opus Series harkens back to classical still life. The Terra Series embraces mystery in an unknown path. Other work may emphasize technique more than subject matter concentrating on color, pattern, texture, composition. I find this work challenging and invigorating and of no less interest.
