It wasn't so long ago that on a lark I arranged some leftover wreath greens and a poinsettia face-down on my cheap Visioneer office scanner...it was a few days before Christmas and it was too late to make an artsy-fartsy card to send to my friends and relatives. I clicked "scan". I was expecting to get some "representational" image- perhaps a painterly blur of colors. But what I saw before my eyes was something so stupifyingly realistic that I was struck dumb. It was an image so dimensional and real that the flower appeared to jump off the screen at me. I was dazzled and quickly became bewitched. A few months later I cultivated a lot of annuals that I thought would be "photogenic". It wasn't long before I was totally obsessed. I didn't have a clue that there were many other photoartists who had "discovered" that a flatbed scanner was essentialy a cheap digital view camera with a very large macro lens! There are now over 100 artists exploring the emerging medium of "scanography". What began as a novelty in the late 1990's is now a bonafide artistic medium.
