Self Portrait

I live in Santa Fe,NM and this following bio was written by my sister. Who loves me...

Kat Schilke is a self taught artist whose creative expression follows no rules. She amusingly describes herself as having "artistic craft ADD", jumping from one medium to another. Some of her past works have cleverly utilized recycled materials in three dimensional projects. She has also created extraordinary decorative and functional pieces in beading and jewelry. As a painter, her work has cultivated a passionate and devoted family of collectors. Her talent as a costume designer spans decades and she has been sought after to create for numerous theater companies. Enrolling in her first printmaking class a few years ago, Kat was captivated by the free flowing approach that working with ink on a plate could give her. "Printmaking is always new for me, there are new colors every printing session. The process of printing may be the same each time, but the possibilities are endless." Kat's approach to a day in the studio is anything but planned, and she likes it that way. She lays out a basic palette of process blue, yellow and magenta then begins the alchemy of printing. " I don't labor over the process." I want to get it on the plate and onto the paper then move on to the next one." She likes to work quickly and simply, letting the process carry her along. "I like the one drop process of printing. If I am working to achieve a glowing effect then I will use several drops to achieve that."

Some of Kat's richest and most provocative come from what she calls her, "End of the Day Plate." By taking the end of the day palette of inks and reworking a previously printed plate, she creates a series of prints with similar "ghost" elements or images. "Reworking a plate really gets me going. I love building the layers using the ghost images and the new ink."
