Through my art, I try to express the way I look at life and the way I approach and assess problems. My medium of choice is printmaking, for in the very nature of this medium, definite stages are present, and the focus on process is fundamental. The process by which I create my work is part of the meaning. By slowly building layers, I formulate my story. The shapes I have created become characters, and I use these characters to construct compositions and express feeling. I show my viewer how to look at my work and teach them how to make connections from one piece to another by repetition of shapes, derived from bodily organs and plant forms, the composition, punctuated by arrows and dotted lines resembling dress pattern directions, and color theory. By illustrating these connections I strive to help the viewer to understand the meaning in something they might not initially comprehend.

I have chosen my imagery for several reasons: The idea of how the body is connected, and how, if one thing happens, it affects something else is an idea I find fascinating. For example, when introduced to extreme emotion my mind races, which makes my heart pound and my stomach flip, which affects my intestines. This one thing leading to another is an idea I really relate to and it is mirrored in the process of my printmaking. The directionals and repeating shapes on the other hand, came from a different place. I enjoy sewing and I make many of my own cloths and quilts. So, in a sense, dress patterns are directional mappings for which I am constantly inspired. They teach me to put things together in a very clear and precise manner, incorporating words as well as symbols (at least they do if you know what the terms and symbols mean). The idea of clear directionals and the symbols that show the viewer how to make connections is a concept I enjoy, especially since they allow me to make up my own directionals.

With the combination of these concepts, I build up imagery, creating a balanced composition. I want to tell a story with my work, to lead the viewer to make connections between each piece. These connections give the viewer the context through which to understand the language I have created and the mood of the characters I have invented.
