Richard Berman was born in South Africa, lived in Texas for 10 years, and moved to Los Angeles in 1993. Since childhood he has always been fascinated by the variety of cultures around him and started capturing them on film in 1992. Richard received a full scholarship to travel the circumference of the planet on Semester at Sea where he studied under Brooks Institute of Photography professor, Robert Werling.
Although most photographers place themselves in a box focusing on only one style, Richard celebrates versatility and prefers to cover a number of different genres. At an exhibition of his work in Venice, California, patrons declared how refreshing it was to see such a variety of subject matter executed so magnificently. Whether commissioned to put celebrities on film, show hope in an Indian orphanage, capture the daily life of Bedouins, explore New Zealands natural colors or Australias wide open spaces, steal a private moment between cows, or bring out the soul in ones eyes, Richards sensitivity, sincerity, warmth, and soul are present in every vision. He has photographed celebrities such as Elton John, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Sheryl Crow, Shaquille ONeal, Sharon Osbourne, Boys II Men, Nelly, Shaggy, Peter Strauss, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu to name a few.
In his search to appreciate new aspects of humanity and the world we inhabit, Richard has explored hundreds of cities in 29 countries. Most recently, Richard photographed, directed, and produced a documentary on co-existence between Jews and Arabs in Israel called The Fire Within (www.fire-within.org). Richard currently resides in Santa Monica, California and enjoys riding through the mountains of Malibu on his horse, Casey, every chance he gets.
