MARACATU

Negro dance, negro music, negro tradition. Dramatic representation of the African courts brought to Brasil by the slaves. The Maracatu is a gross imitation of aristocracy which has become an important component of Northeastern folklore. It is a kind of carnival group which appears to cheer the revellers in Recife and the interior of Pernambuco. It translates Africa, Africans. The Maracatu Elephant carnival school, founded in 1800, has its history documented in a movie (Alberto Cavalcantes first film) and in old documents. It has not appeared since 1962 when its queen, Dona Santa (picture) died. Its collection has been donated to the Anthropological Museum of the Joaquim Nabuco Institute of Social Studies. The picture measurs 70cm wide by 90cm high.
