BOI-BUMBÁ

Is an agricultural trick staged by simple people, from the country and the labour of the sugar cane. There are many bois and with the most diversified denominations. The trick passed from generations to generations and is today in the carnivals. It gains the streets, leaving from the quarters and fields away from the city. Today the Bumba-meu-boi, Boi de Tambor (Drum Boi), Boi de Minas, Mimoso, and of all the denominations gain great expression in all the Brazilian States; they are beneficiaries of federal, state and municipal money to do great and to keep the tradition of this popular folklore. In the carnival, the Boi gains the avenues, shows its plot, generally centering this in a play where a black cattle tender of much confidence of his master steals it to satisfy the whim of his caboclo woman, who is pregnant and desires to eat the meat of the "Mimoso". Innocent, the master, a white man, orders that the cattle tender goes to look for the bull. And so surges the drama, one wasted infidelity act, seen under the aspect of the plot that is made to kill the bull of the master. In Maranhão, apart from the fixed personages, exists the Indians, the Cattle tenders, the Youngster, the Pajé, the Priest, the Doctor, the Clown, the Creole, the Cazumbá and the Burrinha. In the other states, it is easy to find versions where there appear other personages as the Harlequin, Dona Maria, the Virgulino, the Caipora, the Giant, the Foreman, the Royal Caboclo, the Captain, the Ema, the Hunter, etc. "Boi bumbá" is of the city of Gravatá, in the country of Pernambuco, Northeast of Brazil. Excellent work, I like it.

Artist Reply: Thank you for the comment, the piece show a figure of a folklore dance we have here in Brasil, that's called as Boi-bumbá, meaning something like "the beat bull". I still need to give a look at you work, sorry, but I will do it soon. Thanks, bezerraneto
