I have loved to draw for as long as I could remember. Aside from a few classes in community college I am self taught.

I have been influenced by others but I have had no formal training. I hope to sell prints soon. I am enjoying the journey and crossing paths with other creative sojourners.

When you say self-taught, I wonder if it's not really just "born with the talent" as they say. I believe most talented artists are born with the ability of perceiving and putting it to paper, even if they have had formal training. Certainly with formal training you can pick up helpful and new tecniques. Basicly I believe you have it or you don't. I started out at the age of five drawing in the front and back blank pages of books ( much to my Mother's chagrin ). I also had formal training from which I am still trying to figure out what I learned.

I was about 6 or 7 years old when I discovers a 'natural bend' toward art. I ask my mother one day "Why can't I draw?" She stated that "How do you know you can't until you try." Ummm...interesting point our dear mothers can make...so whala! Here I am self-taught with a few art classes in high school and college (since these were more art history, instead of technique studies). Self-taught art is such a wonder and discover about you inner-man! It is a wonderful exploration into imagination and our souls. Viva la artistes!

self taught here too........

Joanne Woolley 20 Aug 2008

I'm self taught which I sometimes think is best because you find your own way and your own unique style which cannot be taught. It's good to get advice and tips, but you should follow your own path and not someone elses:)

I also, am self taught, and have not been painting my whole life. My great aunt was an artist and was a member of the Plastic Club in Philadelphia. I was exposed to her paintings my entire childhood and admired her art world. She inspired me, so much but I never pursued it for a long time. I consider myself an amatuer but I enjoy my hobby. I have hanging on my walls my great aunts paintings as well as my own. All those years of studying her painting has taught me so much in mine. I only wish she had lived to see it.

Self taught here as well. Began drawing at the age of 4. Been an artist ever since. My dad is an excellent artist as well so I'm sure I can thank him somewhat for my talent.

I'm self taught, something of a natural, I did this a month after picking up a brush, with no art training what so ever, it is a 36 x 48 painting, and yes it is a copy, I just wanted to see if I could do it, I amazed myself!!

Yeh! Self taught too! I had always been a little in awe of people with all the training and the correct names for things etc. But as time has gone on I learn, make mistakes, learn some more and progress. I think it is a great way to prove yourself and be proud of what your brain can do all without someone elses influences.

Ditto, Never lifted a paint brush except to paint my rooms. started painting as theory of life. when my mom passed away 3yrs ago. Now I am trying to figure out artist terms or vocabulary. Just loving it!

Kathleen Farmer 13 Sep 2008

Self-taught. Did afew to decorate a store and people started asking for prices! Never intended to go professional - that was 9 years ago.

My skills have increased by choosing subjects that are more and more difficult. I broke my right arm in April so started painting with my left... interesting results. A challenging struggle, to say the least.
