Digging For Clams

"When the clamming season opens on the Southwest Coast of Washington State, you will see people of all ages 'digging for clams' at the edge of the chilly sea."

Artist comment: "This long, narrow gouache painting was a delight to put together. From my research one bright overcast day during 'clamming season', I took my camera and sketch pad to the beach at Ocean Park, Washington to record the scene. I saw families, couples, and individuals going about the business of gathering their limit of this succulent treat. This is as much a seascape as it is a record of the times. Beginning with a softly toned sketch of the elements of sea, sky, and figures, I painted the blue/green of sky and water, leaving the areas of splashes and foam (and the people) unpainted. When I was satisfied with the background, I began to portrray the figures (in no particular order). After the reflections, I 'splattered' in the rocks on the sandy beach."
