Tillamook Rock Lighthouse

"Tillamook Rock Lighthouse (Terrible Tilly) was one of the loneliest and most dangerous assignments a 'keeper' could be assigned to. The structure, a triumph of engineering, was completed in 1881. It was continually manned until 1957, weathering storms of such force that on one occasion walls of water swept over the light and sent a 30 pound rock crashing through the glass in the tower."

Artist comment: "'Tillamook Rock Lighthouse' has long held fascination for me. It has a colorful and treacherous history. Besides the storms driving walls of water upon the rock, there is no safe approach to the rock, prompting the construction of a unique rope and basket 'elevator' to deliver keepers and supplies to the lonely lighthouse. It still stands in the Pacific Ocean, a refuge for wild life and a permanent resting place for the ashes of romantic souls. I painted the scene as I imagine it, using oil on canvas."
